“The real, pure nature, a piece of paradise – until nowadays, these are the big national parks, for which I have fought and will fight. A national park is not fenced, it is a piece of nature, in which only endemic animals and plants exist, without hunting or timber industry. As I said: a pure piece of wilderness.“ Bernhard Grzimek

The migration is the largest mass migration of mammals in the world and a unique natural spectacle. Large herds of wildebeest, Thomson’s gazelles, zebras and antelopes yearly migrate from the Serengeti to the North into the Masai Mara and additionally populate large grazing areas from July till September. In October, the slow return to the south starts. A hungry constellation of predators -most notably lions and hyenas - follow the herbivores all along their clockwise migratory route. The large herds are constantly on the run and follow a choice of better grazing areas. Thus, the 500km long tour develops. When livelihood run short, they move north, pass the Mara river and arrive at the Masai Mara, where they find rich grazing areas containing enough food supply and water. Only when the different grasses are completely grazed, they cyclic circuit of the million herbivores moves on to the Ngorongoro area. As it can be seen, the migration is a unique spectacle of nature and an endless circle of life.
