The Mahale Mountains National Park is located at the eastern shore of the Lake Tanganjika. It covers an area of 1650 km², spans an altitude of 800 to 2400m above sea level and is located about 128km south of Kigoma town. . The highest peak, Mount Nkungwe, rises to 2462m above sea level. The NP mainly consists of woodland, including the Miombe woodland, as well as different forms of rain forest, which span altitude of up to 2000m.
The National park is home to about 700 chimpanzees, and is thereof the most southern habitat of the eastern chimpanzees. Moreover, Mahale is famous for ist diverse bird kingdom (around 230 different species) and five further different monkey species, including Anubis baboon, black and white Colobus monkey, red Colobus monkey, Vervet monkeys as well as red-tailed monkey. Moreover, one comes across warthogs and different antelope species. The only big cat within this park is the leopard. Mahale always was protected by its remoteness and until today , this park is not accessible via road.
