The gigantic (bigger than denmark), wild Selous paradise is the largest protected area of africa and the second largest of the world, covering 50,000 square kilometers.
The general inaccessibility combined with the fact that no human settlement within the border of the game reserve is allowed, makes the reserve a perfect retreat for many mammals, birds, insects and reptiles. The virgin African bush has been unmodified for millenniums and is inhabited by 75 million wild animals. The large Rufiji river, is the lifeline of the park. Only one tenth of the reserve are open for photo-safari and the rest is divided into 42 hunter districts. The Selous has the largest population of elephants. Lions are often seen, as well as large buffalo herds and wildebeest, zebras, giraffes, waterbucks, baboons or elands. With a bit of luck, one can even observe a troop of wild dogs. The extremely rich bird kingdom includes goliath egrets, openbill storks, hamerkop, African fish eagle, sunbirds, river kingfishers and many more and inspire many ornithologists as well as nature lovers. In 1982, the park has been declared as a world heritage site.
