Travel information

Visa regulations:

Kenya: Currently $50.00 US. The visa is available at entry counters in Mombasa or Nairobi or at the border of Taveta/Namanga.

Tanzania: Currently $50.00 US. The visa is handed out with entry to Tanzania at the borders of Holili, Namanga, Kilimanjaro or Zanzibar Airport.

Vaccinations:

A yellow fever vaccination is necessary when entering a third world country. Additionally, we recommend malaria prophylaxis as well as hepatitis A and B. Please contact your institute for tropical diseases.

Money:

We recommend Euro or US Dollars in cash. You can change your Euro’s or Dollars in hotels or currency exchange offices in every major town or city. Moreover, credit cards such as Visa, Master-card or cash cards can be used for withdrawals at cash machines in major cities. Some hotels even offer payment options with visa credit cards!

Insurances:

We recommend the comprehensive all-round package of the European travel insurance. This includes a travel cancellation insurance, a travel cancellation expenses insurance, a travel health insurance including emergency help, comprehensive all-round service, travel baggage insurance of up to €2,000.00 and protection for delay. The contract can be completed without any amount retained.

Climate:

Tanzania:Moderate climate conditions dominate the Kilimanjaro area, including a short rainy session from April to May. Temperatures within the East African high plateau tend to fluctuate with hot days and freezing cold nights. Near the coast, one can expect hot temperatures combined with high humidity.

Kenya: Moderate climate conditions dominate the high plateau, situated above 1,800m, including a rainy session from April to June and then again from October to November. Rainfall can be usually expected during the afternoon, in the evening or at night. Nights are relatively cold. In this region, the coldest time of the year can be expected during July and August with minimum temperatures around ten degrees. The warmer period can be expected during January and February with maximum daily temperatures of 25 to 26 degrees. Humidity percentages average at 65%. Temperatures in Nairobi vary between 11 and 21 degrees in July and 13 to 26 degrees in February. The yearly average precipitation rate amounts to approximately 958mm in Nairobi. Near the coast, temperatures vary between 22 and 32 degrees, with an average humidity of about 75%. The highest precipitation rate can be expected from April to June. The driest months are January and February. The warmest months are January to May and again from October to December.

Currency:

Tanzania: For Tanzania, we recommend US dollars in cash and small notes. On-site, money should be changed into Tanzanians shillings. Kenya: For Kenya, we recommend US dollars or Euro’s in cash and small notes. On-site, money should be changed into Kenyan shilling. Payments via credit card are possible in nearly all lodges.

Tanzania, Kenya: daylight saving time 1 hour according to CET. Winter time 2 hours according to CET.
